Maxwell has high expectations and for the most, part parents who also expect the most from their kids. Parental commitment was the highest that I have experienced in Lexington schools. Parents volunteered on a regular basis to assist in the classroom, chaperoned for field trips, attended daytime school assemblies and supported the PTA and SBDM council.

I know of one instance when a child was admitted past the first grade, when she demonstrated ability in three languages(English, Spanish & Chinese).

My son took the ACT in the seventh grade(as part of the Duke TIP search) and along with six others from Maxwell received statewide recognition. I think this speaks highly of the program.
Thanks--personal experience is the best guide! Also, parental involvement makes all the difference in a school. What is an SBDM Council?

Where are your kids going to go to high school??

They have parent reviews and also a numeric rating system where they take into account all factors of a school and then assign it a number rating, with "10" being the best. The schools you listed earlier were ranked the best and another called Scapa at Bluegrass was rated a "10" as well. Good luck with your search!
I think that GreatSchools.net will be my next haunt on the internet. Thanks for the help.

They will attend Henry Clay High School (from which I graduated in "69) since it only a ten minute walk through the park.

I hope this helps you figure out where you wish to have your children attend.

So do you have to live in a certain district to get into Henry Clay or is it an exam school or lottery school?

Thanks:--)

We live in the regular school district. Only Maxwell is the magnet school.

Bryan Station does have a rough reputation. I went there more years ago than I will admit to and it was rough back then too. However, the immersion program is somewhat separate. I have a friend with 2 children at BSH and they have been very happy with the program. Her brother has lived in Spain for 15 years and went her children went to visit he was very impressed with their conversational Spanish. The children within the immersion program always score well above the area kids at BS. They don't break this out (that I've been able to find) on the school report cards. You might call the SBDM president for the school for a first hand parent opinion. I believe the SBDM presidents are listed on each schools website.
I know of a teacher whose children attend LCA and she receives a 25% discount on their tuition. I think this is about standard for most of the private schools.

SBDM is he acronym for Site Based Decision Making council. It consists of a few parents (depends on the size of the school and selected through an election) and a few teachers and the principal. Each school has one and they make all of the decisions within the school. They wield a LOT of power over what happens within the school.
btw-my son will attend Henry Clay in the future. If he stays on track he'll go into The Liberal Arts Academy there. It is the extension of the gifted program that starts in 3rd grade.

How do children get into the gifted program track? Testing? Teacher recommendation?

Thanks:-)
