Possible Relocation from Northern Ohio and have some questions

+What are the nice bedroom communities around Lexington and why?

+What areas are most desirable and why?

+What towns outside of Lexington are desirable and why?

+What areas are less sought after and why? Is there a "bad" side of town?

+How do the winters compare with Northeast Ohio?

+How are property taxes, vehicle registration, and are there any "hidden" taxes or such that someone may not know about or think about until they actually make a move and purchase real estate?

+How is county real estate taxed in KY...does the county appraise it to determine the value or is it based off of your purchase price?

+How far do most people commute for work? Is there an area outside of Lexington that is popular to live for a reason...but then commute for work?

Any other useful information in regards to the surrounding Lexington area would be appreciated.

I appreciate your insight and answers in advance! Thank You!

All of the smaller towns which ring Lexington have nice areas. Versailles, Georgetown, Midway and Paris probably are the most physically attractive; Nicholasville probably is the least expensive and the fastest-growing, with the most apartment complexes and new housing developments (Georgetown also has grown rapidly in recent years, thanks to the huge Toyota assembly plant there). Many people commute to Lexington from all of these towns, as well as from the towns a bit farther away: Frankfort, Winchester, Lawrenceburg, Richmond, Berea, Mt. Sterling, etc. Both I-75 and I-64 provide rapid access, which makes commuting less of a hassle.

In general, the south side of Lexington is considered preferable to (and safer than) the northside, but there are exceptions. Take a look at the many videos posted in this forum to get a feel for the different neighborhoods. The neighborhoods close to the University of Kentucky off of South Limestone are almost entirely student rentals these days, with less than wonderful results (see current news stories, alas). Farther out Limestone, which becomes Nicholasville Road, are some extremely nice older neighborhoods: Cherokee Park, Tahoma Road, Shady Lane, etc. Similarly, adjoining older neighborhoods Ashland Park and Chevy Chase are about a mile east of the university and are extremely attractive, well-maintained and in demand. There are numerous pleasant newer neighborhoods not far from the Nicholasville Road area, but the road itself becomes almost entirely commercial after the Southland Drive intersection and bears heavy traffic. In general, the public schools on the south side of town are considered superior to the schools on the northside, with a few exceptions here and there.

There are newer subdivisions to the east, south, and west of town, but most growth has been in the south and more recently, in the east.

We have four seasons and our climate is considered moderate. We had a very mild winter and spring arrived extremely early this year. Winters are chilly and gray, spring is an explosion of green everywhere, summers range from balmy to hot and humid, and falls are colorful but can also range from warm to cold and wet.

I'll let others answer tax-related questions. You should be able to find many of the answers you seek online, however, in the state and local government websites.
