I am a "transplant" to the Lexington area myself and have become very happy here after escaping the high taxes/urban sprawl Cincinnati had become. My wife and I bought a house here in July 2005 and we've come to enjoy the many amenities Lexington offers. Lexington has been more careful than some other cities to avoid "sprawl" The Hamburg Pavilion area on the southeast side has grown immensely with extensive shopping & dining but thankfully they have kept it from spreading too far. You can grab a Starbucks and 5 minutes later be driving past cows! I'm a mortgage loan officer here so I'd be happy to answer any other specific questions you have about housing.
Unemployment remains low compared to other areas in the state as many companies have established their operations here together (Toyota, suppliers, etc..) The equine industry as well as the University of Kentucky generate a lot of commerce here too.
Best of luck to you!
