I have no experiences with BH. After my husband's hernia surgery, cancer, and heart attack, however I would highly recommend UK and Markey Cancer Center. Everyone we dealt with was thorough, kind, and overly compassionate.
I had a surprise visit to the UK ER last week after badly slicing up my arm when I tripped as I was turning out lights in preparation for bed, but fell and encountered a glass display cabinet on the way down. Everyone I encountered was uniformly kind, professional, and thorough, explaining everything they were doing and the reasons why. Left via cab at 2:00 a.m, with a fractured toe plus a bunch of x-rays plus a tetanus shot plus 16 stitches in my right arm. I'm extremely thankful that no nerves or arteries were severed and than my hand function is unimpaired. And I am very grateful for the excellent treatment I received in the ER.
I'm also grateful that COVID-19 patients in the ICU or elsewhere at UKMC are nowhere near the ER, and suspected cases are being brought in through a different entrance and kept separate from other ER patients.
On the other hand, when I last visited Baptist's ER several years ago for an allergic reaction (to soy) affecting my breathing, I was taken back promptly, vitals were taken, and I was put on oxygen and a Ringer solution drip and various monitors - but was given nothing to counter the reaction. I was there for several hours, mostly alone, then was released and told I wasn't really having a reaction, but I knew I was, and I knew what had caused it: hidden soy ingested late the night before. I drove myself home, took a Benadryl, and that took care of it. As noted, this was a number of years ago, but the ER crew I encountered looked at the numbers rather than listening to and looking at me. Not good. I hope things
have changed.
Since then, I have visited Baptist's excellent doctors for a variety of other things and my GP is affiliated with Baptist. I also have had PT at Baptist, and was pleased with my treatment and that staff.
These are just my own experiences and should not be taken as indicative of the atmosphere and general quality of care at either hospital. But right now, if I were in need of ER treatment, I know where I'd go.
The reason I’m asking us we are planning on relocating to the Lexington area. It seems the prices are better in Richmond, but my family all have serious medical issues so I’d prefer to be closer to UKMC. So much to consider!
Thanks - yes, it was the worst injury I've ever had and I hope it retains that title!
Lexington serves as a regional medical center for Central and much of Eastern Kentucky. Richmond's Pattie Clay Hospital is fine for most needs, but more complicated things, Lexington would be the go-to place.
