Lexington appears like a great city. I am in the early stages of possibly being hired for a job there. I am currently in the Austin, Texas area and have lived here all my life. It is a daunting thought that I could be so far away relatively soon. The climate, geography, attitude and urban amenities all seem good. But what would you (especially newcomers, and Texans if any read this) change about the area if you could? Not wanting to trash it at all. I just want some negatives to hold up against all of the positives I've read and seen!
.The traffic is a fair thing to mention but I dont think its all that bad. Just bad at certain times of day.
.Just a handful of really good restaurants (privately owned)
.Need more choices in food shopping. Kroger corners the market. (comparing like chains, not walmart and meijer) Prices are high and selection is just ok.
.If you are coming from a big city you will find it hard to find interesting things to do when trying to entertain company for any length of time. If you are from a small town you may feel like your in NYC.

I think that's a very fair and accurate assessment!

Ok now, Lexington ranks good in the "food shopping" category. Sorry but we have a Whole Foods along with a million other grocery stores. Forget about that? What else do we need?
I would like to see a different grocery store chain come into town, like a Food Lion or Publix, just so you have a little more choice. Were there every Winn-Dixie's here or has it always been mainly Kroger?

Yes, Winn-Dixie was quite popular in Lexington at one time. Like back in the 70's.
Winn-Dixie was here in the 1950s through the seventies, as I recall. I belive they had a bankruptcy problem or something similar, alas. However, Slone's isn't bad, though much smaller than your typical Kroger's. There's also a good variety of bakeries here.
And the farmers' markets are great for fresh locally grown produce and much more, as they've expanded to include baked goods, free range eggs, honey, flowers, meats, and even beautiful Kentucky agates (thanks, Roland!).
