Lexington is definitely worth checking out-- in my opinion it has a lot of city conveniences but also a lot of outdoor recreation within an 45-minute to an hour radius, and in general the cost of living, including housing, runs lower than Louisville. Definitely not just a college town, as we have a Children's Theater, nice farmer's market in the summmer, several good schools, lots of youth sports and in my experience at least one really nice YMCA (haven't been to all of them). Economically it's been less hard hit than other areas in the past few years. I think when it comes to things like entertainment, nightlife, the arts, and even traffic, a lot of how well you'd like it comes down to the size of area you are coming from and what you're used to.
