I will be moving to Lexington in July for two years. I am a single woman in my early 30's and would love some feedback on parts of town to live in. I am coming from Atlanta. I already realize that Lexington will be quite a change from Atlanta but I am looking forward to experiencing the beautiful outdoor opportunities that your state offers. I would love to find an area of town that caters more to 30's professionals and not college students. Is this possible? Any places that have restaurants/night life within walking distance?
Yeah, Around Chevy Chase or on the East side of downtown would be the best if you want to walk to a few places. What is your price range? Rent or buy? If renting do you want a house or an apartment? These answers will help us to match neighborhoods for you. It is hard to get into Chevy Chase for under $300k, but you may be able to rent an apartment for a reasonable amount. For the $200-300k range, Mount Vernon and parts of Hollywood are even closer to things to walk to for you.
Within Chevy Chase there is a street named Romany Road that has a few shops, a grocery store, bank (I think it is still there!) and a couple of restaurants. On the edge of the neigbhorhood along Tates Creek Road where it becomes East High Street, you have a durg store, bakery, hardware store, Billy's BBQ, Buddy's restaurant, Starbucks, etc. Around the corner you have South Ashland Ave and Euclid Ave. Here you'll find most of what you will need on a daily basis within walking distance. It is kind of like a mini-downtown. The further you go down Euclid, it does become more UK students.
The South Hill neighborhood which is directly south of downtown sits between downtown and campus. Because of price, there aren't many students that live in the dozen or so blocks that make up South Hill, but they do live a couple blocks from there. That would put you within walking distance to the restaurants and bars and shopping around campus and also the restaurants and shopping and bars downtown.
