Hi everyone! I have a relative and a few friends in LR. Never been there but I am thinking of going down for a 5 day vacation. I live in PA and I would want to fly. I would rather be in the city, not out on a highway somewhere by the airport. I love antiques, art, anything historic, gardens, and I am a vegetarian mostly. By that I mean I occasionally eat fish and sea food but no meat.

Other than that I love Southern food - grits, grits and shrimp, grits cheese casserole - the whole grits family, greens, biscuits and southern deserts.

Very interested in music, indie rock, blue grass, anything not pop.

Love to shop. Fan of Prez. Bill Clinton and interested in social history and the civil rights movement.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd recommend staying at the Peabody. It's a good location to access all the things you said you were interested in.

definitely stay in the River Market. in addition to the Peabody, the Capitol would also be wonderful (and you can get some awesome southern cookin' there too) but there are less expensive options as well. or you could stay at the Empress B&B, in a historic Quapaw Quarter home just a short distance from the River Market.

off the top of my head, with your interests I would particularly recommend:

  • Old State House and MacArthur Military museums
  • Clinton Presidential Library
  • Arkansas Arts Center
  • Quapaw Quarter walking tour
  • Central High Visitor's Center
  • Mt. Holly Cemetery
  • Wildwood Park
  • Hillcrest's art galleries and antique shops (most can be found on or just off of Kavanaugh)
  • Hot Springs day trip (or even an overnight stay at the Arlington) to visit Bathhouse Row, the Gangster Museum, Garvan Gardens, and maybe even ride the Ducks!

come to think of it, Arkansas Parks and Tourism is conducting a poll in honor of Arkansas’ 175th birthday. their website has a pretty extensive lists of some of the coolest things to do and see in the state!

All good suggestions, but don't forget Scott for antiques.

also I-40 Antique Center, on, um, I-40 headed toward Conway. not a fancy name but some of the most beautiful stuff you could want to see. I can't really afford anything but I do like to visit all of it.

also (I can't believe I didn't mention it before): you must be sure to ride the trolley to Argenta!

www.argentaartsdistrict.org -

be sure to check out Galaxy Furniture: FABULOUS mid-century furniture and vintage clothing.

an especially good time to go would be the third Friday of the month, for the Argenta Artwalk. downtown Little Rock has one too, on second Fridays, and Hot Springs has one on first Fridays!

so pretty much any weekend you're here you should be able to hit one!

^ This! Jenni-b's post should steer you in exactly the right direction, and I think you'd love the Hillcrest shopping/dining scene after a day at the museums.

While in Little Rock ask at every stop "where is big rock located?" that is what I want to do if I go there.

I'll go ahead and tell you so you don't have to ask when going.
The "Big Rock" is the bluff along the river near Fort Roots on the NLR side further west from the "Little Rock".

Thanks y'all! Everyone has been so helpful! I guess "Southern Hospitality" is not a myth - at least not in Little Rock! I am actually thinking about having a second home in the South. Like many northerners, the first place I think of is FL. My niece lives in Boynton Beach, but I have more friends in Arkansas.
Little Rock is way more expensive than FL, but I have a feeling that I may like it better.

Thumbs up Adventure

You should climb Pinnacle Mt.

....It isn't an antique shop or restaurant but it is a great adventure!
