Hello everyone. Mid 30s medical device guy here. Currently living in STL and loving it. I have an awesome loft downtown and feel a bit spoiled with the limitless things to do within a short walk.. and then within a short drive you have numerous other fun things. Anyway, I like it here, not crazy about moving but received a job offer I absolutely could not even think about turning down. I will have a huge territory, so I have a choice of several states.. I've narrowed that down to AR and LA. Leaning towards Little Rock, but simply don't know much about the area. I know this sounds crazy being that I live in St. Louis, but I've heard bad things about Little Rock crime and it's a good bit smaller than STL. Finally, to the point: Are there better options in Louisiana than Little Rock? NOLA is a no go, been there enough to know I don't want to live there.. love to visit, but hate the weather (I like having seasonally appropriate weather).

As far as Little Rock is concerned, I'm looking to lease a loft or possibly a house for the first 6 months to a year, then probably buy a house once I'm accustomed to the area and settled into my new job. I want a really nice place in a really nice area and don't mind paying for it, within reason of course. The option to walk to nearby bars&restaurants would be GREAT but not critical. Any insight/advice would be much appreciated!

Check out Shreveport/Bossier City, LA. Similar climate to LR but significantly less crime and about the same size. Fayetteville in NWA is very nice, just a bit smaller.

Downtown Little Rock is nice. There are several loft and condo buildings overlooking the Arkansas River. Its a manageable sized city.

The crime in LR seems to limited to a few areas south of the downtown area. West Little Rock is the high growth area, and is very nice and probably also low crime.

I don't think there's a single city in Louisiana nicer than Little Rock, other than certain areas of New Orleans. Shreveport's downtown area seems pretty unsafe, but that is just my personal experience staying at one of the casinos there for a few weeks on business. Little Rock's downtown has much more foot traffic and lots more new stuff in it than Shreveport or Baton Rouge.

And Shreveport's metro is significantly smaller than Little Rock's. Shreveport metro is actually smaller than the Fayetteville/Northwest Arkansas metro.

Check out Hillcrest/The Heights in Little Rock, just west of downtown. It sounds like you are an urban-dweller, so I wont suggest suburbs. Take a visit to Little Rock and walk President Clinton Ave, visit the presidential library and see the bike paths and ampitheater on the river front. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The downtown area, and Hillcrest should have the highest concentrations of single people in your age group. You might also check out an area between Hillcrest and downtown called Riverdale.

Feelings aside, Little Rock's murder rate is 19/100,00 versus Shreveport's 8.5/100,000 and Bossier City 1.6 murders/100,000.

I would still probably pick Fayetteville over anywhere else in Louisiana or Arkansas.

Thanks so much for the responses. I'm flying blind here, this is a tremendous help!! One requirement I forget to mention is I have to be near a major airport, company won't approve a place that costs too much to fly out/in. I just looked up Fayetteville and indeed, looks like super nice place but not sure about the airport situation. I have heard Shreveport is a cool city, I will look into that as well. I'm a big outdoorsman, love MTB, hiking, kayaking, fishing, snow skiing (i know i won't be getting that.) You name it, I probably do it or want to do it, so that's definitely of consideration. Hoping to be able to check out most areas prior to having to commit, no idea if that will be possible. Thanks again for all of the suggestions! Keep'em coming

There is more elevation change within 10 miles of Little Rock than there is in the entire state of Louisiana. If you are a cyclist, google the River Trail in Little Rock. I am also into many of the same outdoor activities. The Ozarks are north of Little Rock and the Ouachitas are west. You'll find lots of trails and lots of water to kayak nearby.

I'm very familiar with Little Rock and Shreveport.

Little Rock's crime is very segregated. There are neighborhoods you would not want to be in, but much of the city isn't bad at all.

There are brand new "suburban" areas within the city of Little Rock where there is no violent crime to speak of. Its actually growing. The actual city, not just the suburbs. And the downtown area of Little Rock is clean and as safe as any urban environment. Its a city of 200k anchoring a metro of 700k. Shreveport is a city of 200k anchoring a metro of 400k.

New Orleans and Baton Rouge have serious crime problems of their own. Shreveport really doesn't really have the same "cool" downtown that Little Rock has. Its a combination of casino-seedy and relatively mediocre otherwise, in my experience.

I love Fayetteville and would recommend it to anyone. And lots of people in Fayetteville and Northwest Arkansas look down on Little Rock. I'm not one of those people. Little Rock has a lot to offer and its really not that bad, aside from a couple of nasty neighborhoods.

To the OP, Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport is not bad, depending on what your most frequent destinations are. With the business community here, there are many direct flights to large cities. That airport is about 25 minutes from Fayetteville. There isn't as much urban fabric here in Northwest Arkansas as the cities you mentioned, but we find Fayetteville to be a great town and full of interesting people. Outdoor culture is very important to the community here. We moved here from Austin and couldn't be happier.

Just to be clear, we looked at another couple of southern states before choosing Arkansas (from Austin). We had stereotypes in our heads about our new home, but found Arkansas offering more for us than Mississippi or Louisiana, by far.

My opinion:

ANYWHERE in western Arkansas (from around Mt. Ida/Mena/Hot Springs northward) is better than ANYWHERE in Louisiana. This is coming from someone who has spent 52 years in the latter.

Cities are not my thing, but if they were (and I was able to afford to live in a nice area), I would move to Little Rock for a nice job offer. As another poster pointed out, you would be located so close to so many kinds of outdoor activities within a few hours' drive that it would be hard to decide what to do every weekend!
