Hello-

I plan on walking mostly in London... but me and my gf still want to get an oyster card for some situations so a few questions.

1. I leave next Friday afternoon, is it a bit risky to order one online that needs to be shipped to the US?

2. We will be staying near St. Pancras, and a lot of things are walking distance, we don't mind locations that may take an hour or a bit over to walk to even, but if the situation arises and we need to get somewhere quick we would use the oyster cards. With that in mind, for 4 days in London, any one have any suggestions for how much we should put on card?

I would stick 20 pounds incl deposit and see how much you use them esp since you plan to do a lot of walking....... There will be a running total visible every time you use them. You can top them up in most newsagents as well as tube stations if you need to.
You can just buy them at the first tube station you come across... maybe Heathrow ?? I wouldn't bother to order them online.

If the OP is an American, they will not allow you to buy them at the tube station. Americans can only buy them through the visit Britain site. Not sure if there is time, however...

I think you can just pick one up at a train or tube station, although I'm not 100% sure (I ordered mine online). You can also just top them up as and when. Just stick 10 pounds on it and then top up if you need to.

This website will help you https://oyster.tfl.gov.uk/oyster/entry.do

Anyone know for a fact? I have the option for a visitor Oyster directly from oyster.tfl.gov.uk but it shows from there it won't make it in time. I also have the option from visitbritain which WILL make it in time, but cost nearly $20 more. If I could buy one at Heathrow I'd be fine with it...

I just bought mine at the tube station when I moved down from Yorkshire, can't think why it would be different for somebody coming from America?

I can't see how they could stop anyone from buying an Oyster card at a tube station, seeing as you're not obliged to register it in your name. Some tube stations even have self-service machines, and though I've never checked, I doubt they're sophisticated enough to take your personal details...

Where did you get that from? That's hilarious!

May have to be used in some sort of comedy...

It's very simple, buy them from the station. If you're getting the pic line from Heathrow, purchase them from there. Whoever said you can't buy them cos you're American is on a wind up.
