We are looking to renovate our existing kitchen, need to change the cabinets and basically give it a cleaner look. We do not want to spend too much money as we plan to put this house on the market in a year or so. Would anyone know of a good contractor that they have used for their own home renovations?
What would be the best way to tackle this? I plan to call a bunch of companies and get them to give me a quote....
Hey there...I would recommend you start out by pulling together a specific list of what you would like to have done as well as a general budget. Then contact several contractors and get WRITTEN DETAILED estimates (you will be amazed how many will give you a business card with a price, or verbal estimates, or very loosely written estimates).
Compare apples to apples and make sure the bids match up (they usually don't and that's the only way to be sure you're getting what you need at a fair price). Then make sure you get some recommendations of recent work and visit the homes. Make sure the workmanship is sound.
Also, since you mentioned you will be putting the house on the market, be sure you have all proper permits in place with your village/town so you don't run into any issues down the road.
The extra legwork in the beginning will pay dividends in the end. Hope this helps.
Create a budget for your Kitchen project, if the budget is realistic then call in contractors to bid. Remember the statement still holds true in the bussiness, you get what you pay for. Hiring a deisgn / build company will releave you of alot of stress. Also please keep in mind that although you plan on selling your home in a year or two, the market has alot of homes for sale. How you complete this project may determine how much of your asking price you get and how long your home sits on the market with the other approx. 300 other homes for sale in East Meadow.
My friend used Center Island Contracting and they were very happy. You should be able to find them on the web.
