This post is mostly for Walter. I am curious of the implications.

Southampton News - Around Town Hall: Southampton Town details hamlet boundaries in new map - 27east

According to the story, Town of Southampton re-drew hamlet borders throughout the town to replace what they call "unofficial" boundaries set by the US Census.

So this begs the question - are the CDP maps that we have been using in our discussions on this board to determine exactly "where" an address is located actually the "official" boundaries? Obviously Southampton felt they were not.

villager-li, the Census CDP (Census Designated Place) map is derived directly from the Suffolk County Planning Department, who is required to maintain these maps by the order of the New York State Secretary of State, who, in turn, is required to do so by the New York State Constitution.

It could be that the Suffolk County Planning Department will take under advisement any decision of a town board when coming up with the map to be used concomitant with the release of the 2010 Census.
