I know this is a wide range of schools but we're looking to move to LI and can't decide between the following school districts: Cold Spring Harbor, Manhasset, Wheatley and Jericho. It's not so much the quality of the school (since all are highly ranked) as it is about the type of student/people the schools create. Trying to avoid the "mean girls" type of students where they are not down to earth and feel entitled. Anyone have any experience with any of these schools? Any parents with good or bad experiences? Thank you.

Jericho's population is more diverse and has a larger amount of middle class population than the other three. The Jericho school district includes a large area, and the population varies from people in apartment rentals to mansions in Brookville.

Depends on your definition of diversity, I guess.

Unless I'm way off base, the majority of the folks in the Hamlet of Jericho, and also within the Jericho Union Free School District, are secular, non-observant Ashkenazi Jews.

Really, the majority? I could see this being a large percentage but not more than 50%.

Jericho has a large and increasing Asian population. Great schools has a listing of the population of the school by race/ethnicity - Jericho has 68% white, 29% asian. Manhasset has 73% white, 17% asian, 6% black and 5% hisp. I guess you can say Manhasset is a little more diverse ethicially speaking.

I am guessing Jericho is more economically diverse, but Manhasset could be close there too.

In terms of diversity, Manhasset and Jericho are your best bets.

Cold Spring Harbor
[99% White, 1% Black]

Manhasset
[73% White, 17% Asian, 6% Black, 4% Hispanic]

East Williston
[85% White, 11% Asian, 3% Hispanic, 1% Black]

Jericho
[68% White, 29% Asian, 2% Black, 1% Hispanic]

I'm personally an advocate of Syosset over any of these (with the possible exception of Jericho) but that's just me. Syosset is more affordable and has schools of very similar quality.

CSH is not diverse at all. I have friends from the area and virtually almost everyone in the district is white.

In the late 1970s/early1980s, it was then estimated that Ashkenazi Jews accounted for 70%, or so, of the population.

East Birchwood and West Birchwood, were about 90%; with Oakwood-Princeton Park, South Jericho and West Jericho having less to much less.

Jericho is a great school....I know bunch of graduates from there...A lot of times it's not the school but the parents that shape the life of the students.

So true.

Even in one of Lawn Guyland's highest ranked school districts, parents supplement, and sometimes greatly, what their children are being (or, not being) taught by the high-priced teachers in that school district, by hiring tutors, etc.

Of course, the school district takes full credit for how the children in their district perform, with no mention whatsoever of any supplemental help that parents' provided their children. What chutzpah!

Thank you for everyone's comments. Any experience or opinion on the "mean girls" factor of any of these schools. I would assume that increased diversity breeds more acceptance of others but you never know. Also, any comment on which schools produce a more "down to earth" type? I guess where you have more privileged kids, they'd tend to be more materialistic too. Thanks
