I am considering buying a GPS with traffic updates. On the Garmin website, the map of the traffic coverage area shows that a chunk of Nassau where I work is not covered. The TomTom site doesn't show a map of their coverage area. Based on your experiences with traffic-enabled GPS on Long Island, which brand has the better coverage? I spend most of my time between central Nassau and central Suffolk. Thanks!
My Navigon app on my iPhone grabs local Navigon users and asks for traffic situations, as well as using a public database. I have had many traffic reports in Nassau from it.
I have navigation on my sprint blackberry. The traffic updates are very accurate and its all included in my monthly unlimited data cell phone plan. No seperate unit in the car to worry about getting stolen either.
What? No one is relying on news12 traffic and weather?
I do 1010 wins all the time.... I know I have to wait for 11 mins to get the next update.... but thats how much time it takes between 2 exits anyway in a jam... LOL.

you could also switch over to 880 for traffic on the 8's...so you never have to wait more than 7 mins or so!
I got the tom tom app on the iphone. I also ordered their traffic and it has worked great.
Tom tom creates routes on the iphone depending on time. It will take you the best route with the least amount of traffic for that day. then will give you updates that refresh every 3 minutes.
I used ti to go to medford on sunrise. It warned me of the oakdale murge and then as i got an exit away it said the traffic cleared and boom it really did.
Save your money and just know that you are going to get stuck in traffic when driving through Nassau lol. The news tells you if there is an incident that may make your already packed commute even longer. They don't tell you the typical delays. I would love to see INFORM start using their overhead signs to display travel times from point to point, similar to the recently installed signs on the Northern State Pkwy.
If you have a smart phone with Google Maps, their Traffic Overlay seems to be pretty accurate. Highlights the route the same way most navigation systems do when traffic is observed on a roadway. It's free too!
