25A and explore the areas north of it. Bring a picnic and head to Caumsett Park in Lloyd Harbor. It's a ride north of Huntington, and a nice state park.
Cold Spring Harbor, Lloyd Harbor, Huntington Bay, Centerport, Asharoken, Eatons Neck, Northport, Fort Salonga are some nice places to drive around.
I like the South Shore better but that's because I can find the kind of house I like best there for a cheaper price. The houses are all close together and it's hard to get a lot of property but you can get a really nice-sized house for a good price on the South Shore.
Not everywhere on the North Shore is ritzy and "gold coasty", Massapequa is way nicer than Glen Cove for instance.
I grew up on the South Shore, so I'll admit bias.
