No, I always read here that they are filled with "illegal criminals" so I try to avoid them. Most times I dont have a need for the bus because, believe it or not, I have my own car, but only for the past 20+ years or so.

I hate hate hate buses in general and especially on Long Island...they are slow, run irregularly, and to get anywhere you have to transfer at least once (most likely twice) and still walk a while to get to your destination. You simply can't get around further than your backyard relying only on a bus.
That being said, my husband doesn't drive (yet) and works in Manhattan and takes the N6 (nightmare) and the F train from Jamaica. Without that miserable bus that's packed (no matter what time of day...or night) he'd literally have no way to get to work. Paying for the LIRR is just out of the question. But it seems nobody cares about public transportation out here...it's just assumed you have a car and if you don't, you shouldn't be living here. Which is too bad because traffic is already a nightmare.

You're lucky you live in Nassau, it's even worse in Suffolk. My worse few weeks living on LI were a few weeks I had my car in the shop and had to rely on public transportation. It's ashame, I read that Rockland County (less than 300,000 pop.) has better mass transit than Suffolk.

Question What's new w/ the buses?

I haven't been on the island in 3 years...did the changes go through? How has service been since this thread first started? Curious as to what it's like getting around now in Nassau and between LI and Manhattan

Oh.....So the Nassau Leg. would'nt pony up 40mil to keep Long Island Bus going? Good. Some of that 40 mil is our taxpayer dollars and I don't want it used on LI Bus. Never did. In case you haven't noticed over the past 25 yrs L.I. doesn't have the wide streets for buses and also doesn't have the population denisty of the 5 boros. Long Island was never set up for mass transit. It was set up as a Rich man's retreat/rural paradise and then later evolved into the largest bedroom community in the U.S. Remember in the early 1900's the LIRR was used for frieght and excursion passengers. In the 30's and 40's as Long Island became the new
surburban mecca more and more people used it for working in manhattan. And let's remember most of those people were white collar in the morning, blue coller at night. What gave Long island mass transportation its problems was that Robt. Moses when designing the parkway system designed it so that buses couldn't clear the overpasses and designed the Expressway so that you couldn't run express trains down the middle of it to Riverhead. In effect he wanted to make sure the problems of NYC overcrowding stayed in NYC. If the LIE had been designed to have a wide enough center so that you had express train stations every so often such as at Westbury, Rt 110 Huntington, Happague, Smithtown, Stonybrook, Rt112 ect out to Riverhead then much of LI traffic growth would have centered around the center of the island taking the stress off of lesser roads and leaving the north and south shore roads free of much (not all) commerical traffic. Now as far as your LI buses are concerned. Less be honest about it. Nobody on this web site who owns a home, no matter how big or how small wants buses or bus stops near there homes. Thats not what we moved from the city for. And as for the argument that we should supoport LI bus with tax money. I don't agree. Call me racist, call me unfeeling, call me anything you want. I would prefer there not be a bus service on long island. And if I have to have one I certinatly don't want one that can't pay it's own way! To those who don't drive. Get a car or call a cab! And please don't give me any crying about how the people who use the bus service have no other way to get to work. How did they do it before the bus service? The only way LI Bus will be of any use to anyone is if it becomes an express service only. That means North Shore & South Shore east and west to City line for connecting to Subway or Express service North and South to North & South Shore LIRR Terminals. That's the only way LI bus may be able to pay it's own way. Just don't ask for my tax money for it.
