I agree with Kisel17 (Northport, East Northport, Commack, Kings Park, Smithtown, & Hauppauge) but at 5:00pm it will take you an hour to get home from Garden City to Hauppauge. I lived in Hauppauge (rent was 1400 last year for a 900sqft 1 bedroom) and I commuted to Dix Hills (rt. 231) and at 5pm it would take me 30-45 min to get home (sometimes longer). Hauppauge is nice because you have the option of taking either the Northern State or the Expressway but as with anywhere on LI, you will hit traffic at rush hour.
As someone else said, be careful with what parts of Westbury you look in. Some parts are beautiful and others are extremely sketchy and I personally would feel uncomfortable in some of those areas. I have heard great things about Long Beach, but rent is going to be more because of the bars, beaches, night light etc...

Anything that borders New Cassel - stay west of Post Avenue if possible towards Carle Place, it is much nicer.
