Brookhaven Town on 8/17/2010 has acknowledged that "there is no Hamlet of Smith Point". There are a grand total of 52 unincorporated hamlets in the T.O.B. / one of them is Shirley, the other is Mastic Beach, the other is Mastic.

According to the Suffolk County Planning Department, currently there are 36 hamlets (unincorporated areas), as well as 8 villages (municipal corporations), all or partly in the Town of Brookhaven.
