Alot of people who live in my area, south of Shirley are not aware that they live in the legal Hamlet of Smith Point, NY 11967. I have had my address changed DMV, the banks and even my passport. Getting the word out to those people that live here seems to hard because our local papers have not reported the name change. Some people in the area (not I) have worked hard for the area to assume its historic name. It's a prideful name. I would like to see every one use and for it to get the respect it deserves from the town of Brookhaven, NY

dmurphyg, according to the Suffolk County Planning Department and the Census Bureau, there are 36 hamlets all or partly in the Town of Brookhaven, and none of them are currently named Smith Point.

You can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) your house is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in a house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP, or Census Designated Place, is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)

Also, bear in mind that the majority of places on Lawn Guyland are not in the community named in their mailing address. On LI, You Ain't Where You Think You Are, rev. 2 may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.

Tell'em Wally.

This is what I find so insane, just saying something outloud (or on internet forums) does not make it so. Ok so you bought a sign that says East Yaphank and you plop it out by the Floyd. Does that mean you instantly live in a new made-up place? No. You still live in Shirley. Get over it, no amount of signage is going to change that unless it's put there by the Gov't agencies that govern that type of stuff.

There is no Smith Point as far as a town or village is concerned. Are you delusional?

... as far as city, village and hamlet ...

NYS Geographic Glossary may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".

Bear in mind, there may well be revisions in the borders, names and number of hamlets concomitant with the 2010 Census, when it is published.

But I am correct in stating that their is no actual town incorporated village or what ever called "Smith Point"
I mean you are the boundary guy or guru.
Putting up a sign doesn't make it so.
