Let me answer the question without the sarcasm born of ignorance.
It has nothing to do with operational security. The simple fact is that precinct borders don't necessarily follow community lines. Compiling statistics for a community across two or three precincts can be administratively difficult and relatively unproductive. The police department can cull figures by community, if needed, but doesn't spend the time or effort to do so routinely, since that information is not used within the department or within county government. On top of that, the FBI doesn't want our statistics by community unless those communities are independently governed municipalities (ie, village or cities). The easiest and most productive method of recording and producing crime statistics is by precinct.
For instance, East Meadow is a "hamlet" (Walter G will attest to that) divided between two Nassau County precincts and non-existent to the FBI. Should the Commanding Officer of either of those precincts have a need to present the crime statistics for East Meadow, he can get that information; but doesn't necessarily have it routinely produced or published.
That is not the case in Suffolk, here in Suffolk the precinct boundaries conform to town, village, and hamlet lines. Some precinct boundaries (ie: the 3rd and the 4th or the 5th, 6th, and 7th) do cover more then 1 particular town however all hamlets or villages will fall within a particular precinct.
IE: all of West Islip is covered by the 3rd precinct which in turn covers the entire Town of Islip west of the Connetquot River.
A relative lives in Williston Park. Last week Nassau PD tries to make a drug arrest, bad guys take off in a car, gunfire, chase etc. This happens near a grammar School with summer programs. Would have been nice if someone in Nassau PD presses a button and instantly advises everyone near the incident to stay indoors.
I guess they don't have enough money....... go figure after what we pay for Police protection?
How time consuming do you think it would be for that particular precinct to selectively notify residents within a prescribed radius of the crime? What about people who are at work -- should they be notified, too? Or people who don't use land lines?
It's one thing if it is a school district notifying the parents of a child within a certain school building. It's another to ask for a large police precinct to activate a reverse 911 based upon a few random blocks each incident.
Now what if parents of a child in the summer program were notified and instead of staying put and hoping the school was in lock down, that they raced to the scene and ended up injured by the speeding car or gunfire?
Long Island law enforcement agencies (especially the big two - NCPD and SCPD) don't seem to be very community friendly. They make it a hassle to obtain any sort of information. SCPD even refuses to publish and/or release community by community crime statistics claiming "they don't record crime statistics at the individual community level and only record crimes at the precinct level".
I understand the need for operational security but geeze at least allow the public to know what kinds of crimes are being committed in their communities
If li police weren't community friendly half your family would be I'n the lock up right now.
Unlike Nypd cops li cops give plenty of discretion to little li spoiled brats.

Actually its about $1200 for precinct patrol & another $900.00 for Hqts Tax
by far the largest part of the General Tax levy. Not sure what that has to do with not having a reverse 911 system in the County. Small rinky dink depts throughout the United States have it.

Something like reverse 911 would work well if there was an incident like a search for a suspect that could take awhile. The incident you describe proably went down in a matter of minutes, no time to make notifications.
Actually the incident last about 1/2 hr 45 minutes and involved a Police Helicopter and dozens of Police Cars. Actually one of the cops or civilians at the pct could activate reverse 911 within minutes. This could have been a bad situation with the grammar school luckily the Williston Park Bldg Inspector was around and called the School & advised them to keep all the children inside. Luck should not be part of this equation get reverse 911 and keep citzens informed during serious incidents.

Fine. someone is going to record something, test it, and then send it out to thousands of people in that time. Unlikely. Not a bad idea on it's merits, but in this particular situation, doubtful to have made any difference.

Pools sound very high he must live in a village or muttontown. Either way 3 or 5$ a day is nothing for professional police response as well as ems services. Every dealing I had with them has been a grade a fast response.
