We are trying to buy a house in long island with <= $700k.
Here is our criteria:
1. Easy commute to manhattan: I am working in lower manhattan, my husband is working in midtown.
2. Great school: we have a daughter, she is only 1 year old, but once we buy a house, we plan to stay till my daughter go to university.
3. Asian friendly: we are chinese couple.
4. Young house.
We are looking into Syosset, but it is bit far. Great neck, but within our price range, there is no young house(> year 1980). Garden city is a good choice? How about new hyde park?
In case you are unfamiliar with the local geography
xxyfun, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography, I've sent you an explanation of the very, very confusing geography of "Lawn Guyland" as a DM (Direct Message).

Thanks a lot for your information.
Commuting from Syosset is not bad - for lower Manhattan, you can take the Brooklyn train to Flatbush (no changing at Jamaica) and catch most subways to downtown Manhattan; to Penn Station from Syosset on most other trains - some express trains skip Jamaica.
Probably more available houses in your price range than the other areas you mentioned, especially newer construction.
curious to know if there are any clusters of "newer" houses in Nassau... anyway I vote Syosset for you - commute is easy if it's anything like Hicksville station which is nearly the same distance to Manhattan. We're also asian - we looked in Syosset but bought in Plainview since our money goes further - you have a higher budget than we did... both towns' homes are ~50 years old though.
Now a days i wouldnt buy a "young" house because i have heard bad things. EX: poor building materials and rushed jobs. My brother in law bought a new construction back in 2005 and his roof is already leaking. Im not saying ALL are bad so just make sure that you get a really good inspector for the house you planing to buy.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Herricks Union Free School District includes all or part of the Village of North Hills, the Hamlet of Searingtown, the Hamlet of Roslyn Heights, the Hamlet of Albertson, the Village of Williston Park, the Hamlet of Garden City Park, the Hamlet of Herricks, the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park and the Hamlet of Manhasset Hills.
You're not going to get a "young" house in Garden City for less than $2 million. You'll get an updated house, but it won't be less than $700K.
As pp pointed out, easy commute+young house= nearly impossible to find in Nassau, at least in your price range.
