This is pathetic, just another sign of how outdated and poorly maintained our infrastructure system is here on Long Island

Something needs to change and fast.

Considering the LIRR has been updating its switching and signal system for the past couple of years, I think your comment about infrastructure does not pertain to this current problem. I also don't see how it would make a difference if the equipment was old or new when a fire is involved.

Any other POWs?

I just spoke to my wife who said the scroll on the TV said they expect it things to be running in the "3:00 hour". I am sure it will be wacked regardless as some trains probably arent where they are supposed to be right now for the evening commute.

I was so close to driving in and at the last minute figured with the rain it would be better to take the train.

That was the A,C,E lines, and it wasn't out for months. Originally NYCTA said it would be because the signal equipment was from 1932 and everything would have to be reconfigured for modern equipment.

It was a TA signal employee that saved the day on that one. s/he knew of original equipment removed from an upgrade at another location. The old equipment was supposed to be discarded, but one of the maintainers held onto it.
