I'm currently looking for houses in Islip (Holbrook in particular) and have already found a few that have basement areas with kitchens and bathrooms. I don't care about having to get permits and go through the red tape, I just want to know that it's possible. I called the Islip planning department a week ago and the guy just said "its basically impossible". But I find it hard to believe there are no such cases of legal accessory basement apartments. I asked one listing agent of a place we looked at and she laughed at me and said "honey this is Long Island, no one has legal apartments, they just do it"
Can anyone offer some advice? I saw some other topics about illegal apartments but I couldn't find anything addressing this one. Thanks!
I commend you for your willingness to research recourses, in order to avoid renting out illegally.
I really think its a sin when I see greedy homeowners (that cant afford their homes elsewise) renting out illegal basements to young kids (that are unable to afford the high rents on LI) for 1000/mos. Basements are inadequatly ventilated, harbor mold, and do not have appropriate evacuation means in case of a fire. I never heard of a legal basment apartment in LI
If you cannot afford a home, without illegally renting...it means you should not buy it (real estate agents will encourage you to do opposite, as it is one way to keep the housing prices artificially high)
If everyone was to live within their means...legally and responsibly, prices of homes would eventually have to meet our current incomes.
I rent my basement and I can afford my house with out the extra income. Its alway good to have extra money. I have no mole ..good air...3 ways out just in case. If it was me i would live there. Older kids can afford 1000.00 rent. Thats the rent these for a big clean apt in a good area. If the kids cant afford a house then a apt is it. Unless they weant to live home with mom and dad.
I'm not aware of any Town on Long Island that'll let you "make a basement apartment legal" .
