Please tell me the good ,the bad and the ugly.
Please share info about community,schools ,crime and ease to get around surrounding areas for shopping and work.I am a home health nurse so traffic is a huge concern for me as is the crime rate as I have 4 small children.Has it become a up and coming area or is it just talk? I am a native NYer that has lived in the Pocono area for the last 10 yrs.Husband can work in the area and wants to be close to the beach.
Is this area worth looking at?

I would explore other options. School system is not very good, and crime rate is somewhat higher than other parts of LI. If your moving there because of the beach, there are many other towns close to the beach that would be more suitable for a family with four children. I hope I haven't made any enemies by this post. I'm sure others will be much more blunt and specific than I have. Good luck.

The Hamlet of Mastic Beach has a different border than does the "Mastic Beach, NY 11951" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Mastic Beach, NY 11951" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Mastic Beach and a place can have other than a "Mastic Beach, NY 11951" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Mastic Beach): places that have a "Mastic Beach, NY 11951" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Mastic Beach are in the Hamlet of Mastic; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Mastic Beach with a "Shirley, NY 11967" mailing address.
Shirley/Mastic Beach is a DIVE!! If you want a beach community, this is not the place. It has a reputation for being the "white trash" mecca of LI and having worked there for a number of years, I can't say that I dispute that notion. If you are broke and enjoy the trailer park lifestyle, go for it. If you want something better, go elsewhere.
Thanks for your responses. No we are not broke (thank goodness) I really want to keep it that way,looking for a place that is safe and enjoyable with out breaking the bank. So I continue with my search
If your husband is dead set on the beach and wants easy beach access, perhaps West Islip or Babylon should be considered as they are close to the Robert Moses Causeway, are nice communities and have good schools.

I cant even begin to tell you how much I resent that, as well as the notion that all of Mastic Beach is some white trash trailer park dive... there are a lot of good people here and the beaches are beautiful.
I have now lived here for 2 years and my street is quiet and well kept.
I wish people would keep they're idiotic opinions to themselves when they decide to place a label on an entire area that they don't live in and apparently know absolutely nothing about.
