Hi Guys, we are looking to buy a home in Rockville Centre. Debating on whether to buy in or outside the village. I was told that the village produces their own electricity. I want to know from someone who lives in the village what your monthly electric bills are. (Based on a regular sized ranch or colonial) I am trying to figure if the higher electric bills outside the village would offset the costs of the village taxes. Thanks....

Default A map of the Village of Rockville Centre in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County

Rockville Centre is only the Village of Riockville Centre ... any place with a "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" mailing address that is not in the Village of Rockville Centre is not in Rockville Centre.

Places that have a "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" mailing address that are not in the Village of Rockville Centre are in the Village of Lynbrook, the Hamlet of Lakeview, the Hamlet of South Hempstead and the Hamlet of Baldwin.

A map of the Village of Rockville Centre in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/ae/Rockville-centre-ny-map.gif (broken link)

The Village of Rockville Centre has a different border than does the "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" mailing address and not be in the Village of Rockville Centre): places that have a "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" mailing address that are not in the Village of Rockville Centre are in the Village of Lynbrook, the Hamlet of Lakeview, the Hamlet of South Hempstead and the Hamlet of Baldwin.

When you do find a house that you like, you can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) that house is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP, or Census Designated Place, is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)

And, very importantly, among other things, the Census Bureau's online address search function also indicates in which school district an address is located.

I don't know first hand but we have friends that live in RVC that previously owned houses elsewhere and they say there's a huge difference.

It's due to cheap hydro power coming from NYPA (via their Niagara facility). Same goes for Freeport and Greenport.

*Disclaimer: I'm a NYPA employee.

Then why does the rest of the island have to buy from LIPA? If RVC buys from NYPA, why can't other places?

The very short answer is that they are long-time customers and there is no more power remaining in the program they belong to (Municipal & Cooperative customers) from our Niagara facility.

If you want a very detailed response, I can do so, but it will have to wait until next week as I'll be starting my vacation shortly.
