I heard that they do this every three years to look for things like pools and decks - anyone know if it's true and when it will happen?

I hate the fact that the towns have 'rights' to do this. It has nothing to do with safety, its all about $$$

It does stink, but then again, how much money was the town losing because people were flying below the radar and not obtaining permits?

To the OP:

Town of Brookhaven showed me my property via satellite in real time when I was there. I don't know if Town of Huntington does the same.

REAL TIME?! I don't see how that is technologically feasible.

Maybe I used the term real time incorrectly? It certainly was a 'snapshot' of my yard that particular day.

All I can tell you is that I saw my yard as I left it before heading to Brookhaven Town Hall. My opened pop up camper appeared, my large truck was where I moved it to in order to take the smaller SUV, my back awning was opened (which I don't do often), the day light, the season/blooms were consistent with that day/time.

They can just use Google Earth. I believe if you have the version you pay for, it's more up to date and VERY clear no matter how much you zoom in. I agree, it's all about the $$$.

Google Earth Pro or Enterprise provides the higher resolution and fancy things like GIS integration for municipalities. From my understanding they all leverage the same plates (images) - snapshots in time. Some areas are updated more often then others. Real time satellite access would have all sorts of crazy implications - legally and national security wise.

They got my dad on a deck that they claimed they saw on aerial surveillance (and this was years ago) and they came to my dad's house and asked to see the deck. He refused, and nothing happened.

Eventually dad had to get a CO when he sold the house, but that was 20 years after said deck was built.

OBH, that is scary about the realtime satellite. Yet another wonderful use of taxpayer funds.

The town isn't 'losing' money. They have no right to money from permits for some of this stuff, again it is about $$ not safety.

If you want to remove a ceiling fixture and replace it with a ceiling fan you have to
-Buy the ceiling fan (sales tax money paid)
-Call an electrician to install it (sales tax paid, and income tax by the electrician)
-Get a permit ('tax')
-Get an inspection
-Oooh now the value of your home went up, your tax billis now $10 /yr higher. (more tax money paid forever)

Of course I'm being facetious to make a point.
