Can anyone tell me what Long Beach is like? I mean as a place to live, not just for visiting the beach from somewhere else. What is the demographics there and quality of life? Is this an area that is good for owning a second home or better living all-year-round? I did a search before posting this but didn't find too many detailed descriptions of the area, just a few general references. Thanks.
Long Beach is a nice place. Some people live there because it's by the beach, while others don't. There's some shopping. Every place in Long Beach is close to the train. You can live in an apartment building or a house. It's a mixed neighborhood which consists of maybe 35,000 people. Long Beach is good for all year round. Just because it's by the beach does not mean one bit that it's all guided for the beach. There's a nice indoor pool for the winter and an ice skating rink. I'd say it's a good place to live no matter what the weather is like or what time of year it is.
My in-laws live in NJ. There are apartment buildings and houses for rent. Train, parks, beach(duh), buses, a lot of hasidic (spelling?) Jewish people, (I have nothing against them--I'm just saying that a lot of Jewish people live there), Busy and traffic mostly during the summer. And for whatever reason, everytime I visit them for the day, I hear/see about 4 ambulances/firetrucks throughtout the day. And I mean---EVERYTIME--weird-huh?
Long beach is really nice...there are great restaurants, new co-ops, private homes...my husband is from there and we go there alot for dinner...of course there is the beach which is beautiful...people live there all year round...there is a supermarket there, an ice skating rink, town pool, LIRR, ginos pizza...it is a great place to live, definitely religious diversity exists, there is a west end and an east end, a bay side and an ocean side...I have only good to say for Long beach except the public schools are questionable...I would not move there and put my kids in the public schools, there is no doubt I would put them in private schools...but that is just my opinion!!! good luck
I agree with Wardlwag. Long Beach is a nice area, however, I wouldnt want to put my kids in public school there. The hospital also has a questionable reputation. Another drawback is the traffic and parking situation in the summer months.
Its not really a summer community. Most people who live there live there full time. Its a real mixed group. Young people from the city are moving there. Many older folks live there. There are quite alot of nursing homes and assisted living residences there. Families, black, white, hispanic, asian, orthodox jews....everyone lives in Long Beach.
There are more and more restaurants popping up in town.
All in all....its a nice place, but re-think it if you have yound kids.
JMO!!!
Long Beach is one of two cities in Nassau County. It has pretty much something for everyone. I moved from LB last year down south. I do not regret the move but there are a few things that I certianly miss.
The boardwalk cannot be beat... it is a fantastic place for many things..... excesize, social events (many concerts and organized walks & races) and the views of the beautiful beach. I miss the food, many many great places to eat. I miss Ginos pizza the most!
The West End has the nightlife with several bars and small restaurants. Can get loud during the summer because that is where most of the seasonal renters are. The year round population is around 35,000 but it jumps to nearly 50,000 during te summer. Expext some congestion on summer weekends. West End is atrocious for parking during season too.
The area in the middle of town is called Westholme and is middle - working class 1 and 2 family homes. Really a nice place to live and close to everything. And the East end is similar but a little farther to shopping and slightly more expensive. There are some waterfront homes in the Canal section and of course along the bayfront, perfect for boaters. Along Broadway are mostly apartment & condo buildings with great views of the ocean.
Schools... elementary schools are pretty good and begin to decline as you get into the middle & the high school. There are private schools available through the catholic church & some of the synagogues.
Taxes are typical of Long Island... high. But you do have a full time, paid fire department and a professional, decent sized police department. Which made a difference to me, at least I saw where some of my taxes where going.
Check your inbox... I have sent you a pvt message, too.
I've had a few friends recently (young, 30-ish) sell their co-ops and move out of LB mainly because the commute *off* LB to elsewhere (work, friends) was too long. It can be congested and LB is really off the beaten path.
Beware of the terrible hospitals in the area! South Nassau and the Long Beach hospital are terrible.
Yeah, there are a lot of Chassidic Jews living in Long Beach. And a very small Modern Orthodox community.
Maybe you had a bad experience, however it is my opinion that
South Nassau Communities Hospital is among the BEST in Nassau County. I have had MANY, MANY experiences there, both personally and through many family members and friends. I also work in the healthcare field.
I can assure you...its VERY good.
Long Beach...well thats another story.
