What criteria does a town have to fill to be considered poor or low-income.

Like what median household income does it have to have? What poverty rate? etc, etc, etc

LOL. True, take Wheatley Heights for example. I remember looking a thread not too long ago and Wheatley Heights (which is majority black) was referred to as low income! LOL, what they fail to realize is that if this town is poor then so is Babylon Village, West Islip, South Huntington and many other 'highly regarded towns'! (Because all of those towns I listed have around the same median household income as Wheatley Heights.. Wheatley Heights is even richer than Babylon Village)

Median Household Incomes:
Wheatley Heights= $98,387
Babylon= $91,430
West Islip= $99,485
South Huntington= $102,154

//www.city-data.com/city/Babylon-New-York.html
//www.city-data.com/city/West-Islip-New-York.html
//www.city-data.com/city/South-...-New-York.html

Thank you for bringing that up too.

(No offense to any of the towns listed, my statements are purely based off of fact.)

Another thing I noticed is that Roosevelt, NY is frequently referred to as "impoverished", ghetto, poor, etc, etc, but has a median income of only $3,000 less than Deer Park and the gap was even smaller between Roosevelt and Farmingdale.

Median Household Incomes:
Roosevelt= $75,023
Farmingdale= $77,267
Deer Park= $78,963

//www.city-data.com/city/Farmingdale-New-York.html

Bad Area, Bad School District, or Bad Neighborhood is code for Non-Caucasian on Long Island. It's unfortunate, there are a few bad apples that people then point to and stretch to include an entire town.

School Districts are especially guilty of this flawed system of thinking. A school district, such as East Islip, is seen as "good" because it is predominantly white, yet their graduation rates, SAT scores, and acceptance into top schools is actually quite pedestrian.

Wow, i'm getting a little teary eyed.
I've been saying this since I found this site; neighborhoods are judged by their color and kids get the same education regardless of the district they attend. You throw a dozen kids in a room from 12 different districts and you will not be able to pick out the "Good" district from the "Bad" district. 8 page threads proclaiming one district to be "Better" than another are just plain stupid.
Good work. Positive rep for you all.

LOL! So true. Places like Wheatley Heights, Lakeview, Valley Stream and Baldwin are considered "bad" towns yet they have median incomes that are typical of LI and higher than the state's average.

I agree, it sad that most posters will ignore the facts and still bash these towns.

Travel more. You just described the same euphamisms I've heard in Georgia, Texas, Delaware, Massachusetts, Connecticut, new Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
