I am not a long time long Islander, but living in the main part of Port Washington, I have to say... Sands Point has some amazing looking mansions. Reminds me of some of the Mansions in Newport, RI. Very old money.
It is hard to say which is the most exclusive, but I would have to say that Sands Point, Muttontown, Mill Neck, Lloyd Neck/Harbor, Old Westbury, Centre Island, The Brookvilles, Oyster Bay Cove and Lattingtown would be a tie for most exclusive. Wealthy areas such as Garden City and Manhasset are merely upper middle class compared to these communities.
The Hamptons (for the exception of the Hampton Bays, Brookville (rated the richest in the nation), Old Westbury, Manhasset, Wyandanch, Lloyd Harbor, Fort Salonga, Lattingtown, Woodbury, Muttontown, Anywhere on the island south of Montauk (west of William Floyd Pkwy), Roslyn).
The "Most Exclusive Part" would have to be the Gold Coast - specific towns open to debate... I agree with Crooks "Hamptons" list with a fairly significant step down from Amagansett to the rest.

What about Sagaponack? Unless you consider that part of Bridgehampton but I read that Sagaponack is now a village and the most expensive in terms of home prices. I see you caught Wainscott, so never mind on that one.
According to most realtor magazines on real estate values by LI regions this is the order. I usually pick up these magazines in the Hamptons and the City so they could be biased. The Hamptons The North Shore
The North Fork
The South Shore
About a year or two ago Newsday had an article about the most expensive home on the North Shore but the article stated despite the whopping price it still came nowhere next to several high priced properties in the Hamptons. Does anyone else remember reading this article?
