[/b] They had plans to do that from Hauppauge all the way to Mt. Sinai. There was too much community opposition, mostly from the 3v area. So they nixed the plans for 347 to be a limited access highway like Sunrise.
A quote from a politician about the Hamptons NIMBY's and the defeat of Sunrise being a limited access highway out east definitely fits here:
"They said if you build it they would come. They won and it wasn't built. They came anyway and now what do we have?" - Perry Duryea. Jr.
Here's my question since your parents live near there. Sometimes when there is going to be a major construction/improvements project, they have a presentation for the public showing what is going to be done and the public can make comments. Do you know if anything like that was announced to your parents' community? I think we had all start paying more attention to the "junk mail" coming out of our local government.

Thank goodness they are not making 347 limited access like Sunrise. I used to live off of Sunrise and the traffic noise was terrible. I do live a bit further away from 347 but would probably hear the increased noise from cars passing by at 60-70 all day long, not to mention the people living closer to the road.
I for one am looking forward to what the state does, both with 347 and with 25 (which seems to be turning out pretty good). I think 25 is much worse than 347 anyway. 347 is bad on the weekends with everyone out shopping but otherwise I do not have much of a problem.

I saw the plans when I was in college. They would have had to taken a lot of businesses out through eminent domain, because they are much closer to the road they they were on Sunrise. The Wendy's, Ground Round, and the diner over there in PJS would have had off ramps where they are now..all gone There would have been years of battles and red tape.
The diner is completely gone, the gas station/7-11 parking area on the north west corner of Old Town have been empty for a while, the north east corner is vacant land, and the Capitalone bank on the south west corner is set back from the road.
Maybe something will happen at this intersection during construction. There are already enough accidents there on a somewhat regular basis.

I'm talking about 112/Jane Blvd. The Seaport Diner is alive and well. Everything near that intersection would have to go.
