My parents live near portion and when they started clearing the sides we had figured that they were finally going to widen the road to include some turn lanes or make a 2/2 4-lane road. After much traffic, tearing up, purchased areas, and probably millions spent, we ended up with a wide road with islands in the middle?!!?!! Why did we take all this time and money just to make a road more useless?

LOL! Couldn't agree more. It should have been a four lane highway, not another two lane with a center turning lane. What were they thinking?

Why the islands? Why not the turning lane like on 112/North Ocean. Seems a waste of time. Might as well have just repaved the standard 2-lanes and save the money.
The people designing some of these projects want to slow you down, not make your travel more convenient. We're in for the same thing with 347 "improvement" project. I can't imagine what an utter disaster that is going to be. They're trying to create urban amenities in suburban areas, ie catering to pedestrians and bikes when virtually no one walks or bicycles anywhere.
What needs to be done with 347 is exactly what happened with Sunrise, although obviously you can't do it all the way out because there isn't enough width as you get into Terryville.

I can. that road is going to be a complete mess both during and after the project. the requirements for designing a plan for these roads should be that you have to have driven the road every day, both ways, during rush hour, for a 3 year minimum. then and only then are you qualified to design the improvement project. So instead of a simple solution like less, better timed traffic lights we're gonna get a 45mph mess with huge empty sidewalks save for those Lance Armstrong wanna-bes.
Are you factoring the overapasses that are going to be created at the intersections of Middle Country/347 and Nicholl's/347? Major constriction there which will be relieved. I keep hearing people whine about 45mph speed limits on 347 when in reality, you can't go much faster than that anyway, if at all. I'll take better traffic flow at lower speed than a consistent stop and go nightmare where I get to sit and stare at a 55mph sign on the side of the road. The truth of the matter is that there are just too many damn people on Long Island and faster/wider roadways aren't going to make a bit of difference in the long run. All that would do is make it easier to add more people and back to the jams again.

Even though I've heard about this for years, I'll believe it when I see it.
