If paying for moving and storage is mandatory on my part, I'd prefer to get the cheapest value that remains within the legal requirements. I don't want to invest any more time and money on this deadbeat. I'd appreciate if any land lords who have had similar experiences recommend a cheap, "commercial" (so it can't be self-storage or residential ... whatever that means) storage place where I can leave her stuff for thirty days?
Public Storage will usually give you the first month free and no, you don't have to commit to more months to get that deal. (Or maybe it's a dollar for the month). You DO have to buy THEIR lock...I rented a place from them this summer when I thought I'd have to store my belongings before getting into my new house and I think the whole thing cost $47 for the month (one expensive lock but it's your when you're done). Take the smallest unit you can get - I was happy I didn't end up needing the storage because the place they gave me was not big enough for all my stuff.
I can't think of any place that isn't self storage, and I'm not sure what the difference is. You can hire movers to move the stuff into a self storage place and there's always someone there at Public Storage.
Public Storage charges $1 for the first month, but you have to pay for the 2nd month -- if you move in the middle of the month, they pro-rate it so you would be paying $1 plus 1/2 month's rent. Contrary to the previous poster, you do NOT have to buy the lock from them. You can use any standard lock and bring it to them to put their sticker on it. (even if you buy a lock from them, they're only about $8).
You can call them : 1-800-44-STORE and they'll tell you what the rates are for the size unit you'll be using.
Not sure how much a moving truck would be --- some times, you can find ads for "man w/truck" in the supermarket or even at the storage place itself.
Make sure once you get the unit, you send your former tenant the key along with the unit # and exact address of the storage facility ---- send it certified/return receipt.

My experience was the opposite here in NC - the lock was some ridiculous amount and i had to buy it. My sister even had a P.S. lock from when she moved and they refused to let me use it. But the RENT was free. ANy way you slice it, the amounts are probably the same.
