Quote:
Reforms Will Bring Nassau Back from the Brink of Bankruptcy

Mineola, NY –Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that with the passage of his 2011 No Property Tax Increase Budget, Nassau County’s finances have begun to be repaired after years of mismanagement, a poor economy and overspending. Mangano praised Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt and the Republican Legislative Majority for joining him in holding the line on property taxes while adopting reforms to close a $343 million deficit – the largest in our County’s history.

All he really did was shift around what portion of your tax bill you pay for certain things, for example Property Tax refunds. Its not like we aren't going to still pay for it, its just being shifted around.

Cuts employees to the lowest level since the 1950s;
Slashes the headcount by over 400 positions, including $1 million in the Office of the County Executive
And the population of the county was about 673,000. So now that its doubled, what services are about to be cut and what fees are about to go through the roof?

The proposed budget:

http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/agenci...ed_Summary.pdf

Summary of things going up:

Permits/Licenses $ 1.6M
Sales Tax $20.0M
Fines $37.0M
OTB Profit $ 1.5M

Expect more home and property inspections. Larger fines for items w/o CO. Red light violations are budgeted to increase from 60,000 to 750,000 (yes thats not just an extra 0).

Enjoy the 365 pages of reading.

Very smart move Freeze taxes and hide the increases in other areas. Seriously how many times can you rise property taxes that are already off the charts.

The Sales tax rate is not changing, it is going up from slight growth in spending. The fines going up are from the red light program. The others are minuscule.

So fees are going up only for red light blowers. So unless you blow red lights or like to play the ponies, you should not see any fee increases.

Some of the property tax refunds will be shifted to the towns and schools. When the Towns and schools need to adjust their budget to start paying for the refunds, who do you think the costs will be passed on to.
