Mid 20's and moving to Long Island - help! (East Meadow: to rent, condo)

My job is transfering me to their Garden City location in 2 weeks, and I need some recommendations on where to live.
I will be 26 in August and would like a nice, but not super rich, area of Long Island or Eastern Queens. Maybe an area with a little night life since I am single in my mid 20's. I am open to diversity.
I would like to find a small 1 BR apt for $1000 - $1300 / month,
I will be driving to work in Garden City and would like to limit my commute to 40 minutes. I have a few friends in Manhattan and would prefer a shorter/easier trip into the city. Would living in Queens and communting East to work be a bad idea? If I live too close to the city parking might be an issue.
I have visited NYC a few times and have had a great time each visit, so at first I was fairly excited to live close to the city, but I have been reading extremely negative things on this board and to say the least I am not looking forward to this move as much anymore. I am moving from NE Mass (Lowell area) so this will be a big change

how long would the communute (by car) be up to Garden City during rush hour?
After searching CraigsList I'm thinking I might go with a studio option for around $1100 somewhere nice in Queens. Although, I would want a parking spot in a garage or lot.
How long would the commute be from Forest Hills and/or Bayside to Garden City? I've read those are both decent areas to live.
Long Beach would take a while as it is on the opposite shore of LI.
Southern Bayside would be 30 minutes or so I think as you'll be going against traffic. THere are also some side roads you could use instead of the parkways if needed.
Also check out Mineola. 5 minutes fron Garden City and LIRR station to get into the city.
If you are just going to be here for three years you will be renting then. Therefore, I would say find a place in Eastern Queens, but only North Eastern Queens. There are many nice areas for a young person in their 20s. I would recommend the following neighborhoods to rent in: Glen Oaks, Little Neck, Bayside and Douglaston. Rents are cheaper in Queens than in Nassau and you will get more for your money. Try to rent someones co-op or condo for the best deals. The commute to Garden City will be easy from these places.
North Eastern Queens actually has a lot to offer in terms of places to eat, parks, Queens farm museum, etc...
Forest Hills, definitely...great night life, don't know if your rent is do-able there though...parking might also be an issue...my next thought was Long Beach...Long Beach Road to Linclon Avenue to Penninsula Blvd. to Garden City tops 30 minutes!!!! either is great for a young, single guy...good luck
Good Luck on your new job. I have worked in Garden City for 10 years and now live on Long Island. I live in Glen Cove which I don't recommend for you. But before that I lived in bayside and commuted to GC and it was 30 minutes I never hit any traffic. I took the Cross Island South to Jericho Tpke Rt25 and then went backroads off of Jericho to get to my office. Bayside was great best of both worlds and the rents are reasonable and the best is the train which is 30 minutes to the city and during the week there are a ton of express trains if you ever need to go in during rush hour.
