The teachers are controlled and budgeted by NY City and Buffalo as a single entity, needless to say Nassau and Suffolk are quite different. Long Island loves their small jurisdcitions it just gives them soooo much control.
Interesting how several of Suozzi's budgets also met the criteria for NIFA takeover. But he always managed to make a deal with them before anything happened. Along comes Mangano, submits his first budget (which also happens to meet the takeover criteria) and suddenly NIFA is all lawyered up and ready to jump in. The political stench from this is overwhelming.

Well, since it's coming from a man who certainly knows a good political stench when he smells one....I'll have to take your word for it. I'm willing to bet five bucks you've never made one post on here that didn't contain one of the following words or some kind of variation on it: "Suozzi", "union", "democrat*", "contract", "police". If you were replying to a post or thread that had already used those words but didn't use them yourself, then it still doesn't count.
As for the whole NIFA situation, I didn't really know what to make of it at first. But like I_Love_LI..., now that I know it can't possibly effect anything outside the direct scope of the county administration's finances, I'm totally nonplussed. From the perspective of someone who doesn't get wound up about playing local government fantasy baseball on message boards, it seems like there is a valid reason to be concerned about Mangano's budget. Did we not learn anything from the last decade? I'm not talking about Gulotta either, I'm talking about spending money you don't have - PERIOD. This budget seems like the political equivalent of buying a new Lexus, no money down, when you're already upside down on your mortgage and taking out more credit cards to keep the water on. The kids call that "being (n-word) rich". Maybe while Mangano's at it he can see if they'll lend him a little more money to get chrome spinnaz put on all official county vehicles.
On the other hand, I don't doubt for a second that you may be completely right and NIFA's big move here is nothing more than a partisan d*ck swinging match being played with taxpayer money. I'll even go as far as to say I could be completely wrong about Mangano's approach and that for all I know his borrowing strategy could turn out to be the right move in the long run. However, the bottom line for me either way is that the county admin portion of anyone's tax bill is practically nothing.....so whatever the case may be, it's not worth making a mountain out of a molehill. Granted it's something I should be concerned with, but the sad reality for Nassau is that no matter what takes places here, the net difference is only going to cost/save them .0000001% of what the big ticket items (police, schools) suck into their black hole bottomless pits of money every year. Back when I originally read this and naively thought it might somehow give the county leverage in preventing par-for-the-course price gouging during the next round of PBA contract negotiations, I didn't really care what the ulterior motives were!
*=I would consider "republican" a slight variation of "democrat".

Long Island is a great example of what happens when you live in an area that is heavy Republican while living in a state that is heavy Democrats.

I don't disagree on the 1% for prior budgets but I also don't recall a budget where began with a request for $365 million in borrowing. This budget looks very weak with some very high risk projections. This latest action with the judge may have been just to get their attention.
By the way straight from Mangano's budget proposal, I assume you are in total agreement:
"The County can no longer meet the burden of labor contracts that exceed compounded CPI growth by over $500 million collectively over the life of the contracts. In aggregate, these wage and benefit increases represent a tax increase in excess of 60%. It is impossible for homeowners to sustain the future
growth of the current labor agreements without substantial tax increases. The Mangano Administration believes that at this precarious economic juncture, an increase in tax burden would ensure the continued stagnation of our local economy, increase foreclosures and job losses, would not be prudent, and is simply unaffordable."
Sure sounds like he wants the authority to freeze wages and benefits just like NIFA and don't think for one minute that he hasn't threatened the unions that he is a better option, for all we know he may be paying the fee for the judge out of pocket.

Unless you've had the opportunity to spend some time working in local government, you really don't have a clue how it works (or doesn't). Apparently you have neither the experience nor the insight to accurately determine when you're smelling a political stench. So I'll make it my business to let you know. And along the way, I'll also continue to supply some factual information to counter the ill-informed mob-mentality that is often found in these threads. You're welcome.
I'm not depressed at all.
I'm just mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore. Or something like that. Actually, I just have to laugh really, this whole thing is a joke.
The entire political system is a joke.
But depressed, nope. Just frustrated and angry.
I told you I was going to run for county exec, well let me tell you, as I started shaking the bushes to see how to go about making this thing happen and getting the ball rolling, I'm finding out more and more just how corrupt the government is. Your head would spin. I haven't got a shot in hell going the so-called "legit" route. And, even at a grassroots campaign, if I began to gain even a shred of momentum I would be stopped dead in my tracks somehow and someway.
Sickening and sad right? I'm still gonna give it a shot though. Either way I think I may do some good, because if I don't get anywhere with running for office, I'm going to go public with all the behind the scenes dirt I'm gathering. So yeah, if all of sudden a few weeks go by and you haven't seen a post by me, start checking the bottom of lakes and the pine barrens for my corpse, because I just might get whacked.

I don't question that budgets in the past might have met the 1% but this budget proposal has moved slightly beyond that point. Some may not like the method but the time for miracles is long gone. Maybe they should cancel the contract NIFA put out requesting guidance and go to the governor elect for his opinon but there just might be some objection to that decision.
