Police are closer to 10 or 11% of overall taxes, schools about 65%. However this is about the county finances, and what the county has control over. As far as county taxes, schools make up 0%, police make up about 65%.
The schools are another issue, and another problem that needs to be dealt with, no question about that. However, as far as the problems with the county budget and its finances, the schools don't factor in because the county has no control.
Excellent post, I appreciate the information. It's very easy to see who has a bias around here.

3,300 went to general county taxes.
10% of 3,300 = 330
So I paid 27 dollars a month for the Police. Get rid of the Police Dept and save 300 a year in taxes I pay 3x's that just for my cellphone service a month

Incorrect.
The school taxes make up the bulk of the taxes, that is true. As far as the $3,300 for the general county taxes, that is not correct, that is split between the county and taxes (IIRC you were in the Town of Hempstead). So the breakdown was probably something along the lines of $1,750 to the county, $1,350 to the Town of Hempstead, and the rest to fire dept, and things like that. Out of the $1,750 in county taxes, about 65% of that goes to the Police.
Now the reason I am harping on this is not because the school taxes, administrator abuse, etc isn't an issue. Of course it is and needs to be dealt with. However, this is about NIFA and its potential involvement in the Nassau County budget and finances. The county has no control whatsoever over the schools, and unless we have high level consolidation (any attempt of which will be fought by the wealthier districts) the county will continue to have no control over the schools.
When discussing the issues with the county budget, the finances of the county, and what can potentially be done about the finances of the county, we need to focus on what falls under the jurisdiction of Nassau County, of what can be controlled by the county.

So by your accounts it's 65% of 1,750 which by my 4th grade math is 1137.50 which equals 94.79 a month for your Police services. So if you cut Police salaries by 30% you'll save roughly 25 a month in taxes.
