It's sad that this type of service needs to be provided in our public schools. But it is good to see a school system striving to provide a service that is obviously needed.
I think it is going too far.
Putting a child into a "rehab" is a parent's responsibility, not the school district's job.
Is the school district trying to "help" or actually just trying to entangle themselves further into what should be "parental" business in order to justify yet another program and further try to cement themeselves as "indispensable" to parents? The Newsday article said it was going to be provided at "no cost" to the school district by Daytop, but how much you wanna bet the school district will manage to sneak in a few more six-figure employees to "administer" over Daytop's heads?
I also am doubtful of students taking advantage of it due to becoming grist for the brutal gossip and bullying mill. Who is going to admit they are a druggie loser and go to a program IN their school for all to know about? Sure the program can "protect their privacy" but what are they going to do? Have a hidden entrance? Cloak the participants in a secret "invisibility" cape?
Wow, kids are dying with needles in their arms and the past three pages is the result. WTF. I agree the po-po could do more, I also blame many parents. I also agree with the idea that this might lead to bullying and the like. I'd also like to know if it's just for students or are outside people coming in?
OK.. I reopened this thread after a massive cleanup after the thread was hijacked. Keep it about the TOPIC and any attempt to hijack this thread to discuss PD or Teacher's salaries will result in an infraction. EVERY thread recently has dissolved into bashing police and teachers due to their salaries even this one when the topic was not about salaries.

I think rehab in the schools are fine BUT....dont bill me for it.....If a student enters rehab, their parents should personally be held financially responsible for the additional burden placed on the schools dwindling resources. People need to start owing up to their own messes. Enough PC, they're just kids crap. The young junkies are the future bums, rapists, burglars...their the ones who ruin communities. Why parents arent held responsible is ridiculous. Owners are held responsible for their dogs arent they?

Oddly, I personally know parents with recent graduates of Wm Floyd and the drug problem there didn't seem any worse than any other SD. It's logical to assume if a district is setting up a rehab there MUST be a big problem.
There are problems with all the school districts, but Floyd seems to be in the forefront to actually address the problem rather than pretend it doesn't exist.
