Another positive about Long Island, and something I hope to really take advantage of, is the ease with which one can travel having a large international airport, a large American travel airport, and a smaller airport all within an hour and 15 minutes of eachother. Travel is a much easier process than where I came from, which included a longer drive to an airport that usually required layovers.
That is true! When I take really LONG trips (my personal best: 27 hours straight of flying and layover time, for example; or 16 hours straight on the same plane trapped in the same ^*%#%@ seat) and I talk to other people on the trip, and they say from where in the country they traveled just to get to JFK and how long THAT took, I am so glad I live 10-15 minutes away from it, instead of having to take a big journey just to get to it and then get started on the really LONG trip … and I am also glad when I get back to JFK that is it … no other plane to catch!
You mention the beach which brings up a point. A good portion of the year the beach is completely useless on Long Island and others places in the NE.
If LI had year round beach weather, we would look like Miami. Seriously, there would be high rises right on the water. The winter is what keeps us safe from that junk.
