A few of the great things about LI are the four seasons here (especially the fall), south shore beaches, the wineries, Montauk, Long Beach, proximity to NYC to name a few. What is even better is that my kids love all of these things too (maybe not the wineries just yet).

I look at the people as another positive. I have long time friends and have met plenty of new ones in recent years that I feel the people here are just fine despite what some on this board post.

I love to run on the beach in the off season!

Also I love the farmstands. Am missing them already. Sucks to have to buy stuff from the grocery store.

food (I'm not huge on food, but it's very obvious nothing beats it here/NYC)
never run out of things to do
nice towns/areas
not the boonies (for the most part)
proximity to every store (how many times do you see someone from another forum say "the nearest ______ is 30 mins away"?)

Just like to say kudos to Pequaman for starting this thread. It warms my heart to see people express the good things about Long Island.

I plan on putting my 2 cents into a post when I have the time but I want to quickly mention Dairy Barn, a LI only institution. If someone has already mentioned it forgive me. I haven't read everyones posts yet.

I like the farmstands to but you have to be carefull .A lot of the stuff they sell does not come from LI. Anything not specifically labled as home grown or our own or LOng island grown is usually from new jersey and can be gotten cheaper at a supermarket.

Anyway I love the beaches .The beaches in the winter rock. Nobody on them and as long as you have a hat and gloves on they are not to bad. Also the wineries rock in the winter also . A lot less people. I live in medford though so getting to them is only about 20 - 30 minutes .

I also love our proximity to NYC and how easily you can get to the new england states.

I also love the custer observatory. I did not know it was possible to see so many stars on long island. they even have their own telescope. Technically its free but they ask for a $5 donation . Everybody should gho there once. You can sit there for hours looking at the sky. Go to the wineries and farm stands at night eat at claudios and on your way back through southhold go to the observatory..
Yes traffic sucks but if you leave before the morning rush hour you can get to work fine.
