I also love our proximity to NYC and how easily you can get to the new england states.
I just hate the damned tolls going anywhere beyond Manhattan. The sheer number of tolls (not $, but pay plazas) got so bad we had to get an EZPass even if we only go out there a handful of times a year.
Speaking of EZPass, since the NY one is $1/mo., I had to get the MASSDOT (Massachusetts) version which is completely compatible and freeeeeee. Downside is the NY one has a carpool discount (but you have to go through an EZPass/Cash booth and stop to show them which defeats the purpose).
The views of the Sound from a bluff on the North Shore. I can take that in all day. A ride on the Ocean Parkway doing 55 during rush hour. It's the best views of the South Shore. The Pine Barrens in Calverton spotting a group of deer. Taking a ride back from Bridgeport on the Port Jeff Ferry. After seeing that crap they call Conn. it such a pleasure to see views of down Port and the coast of Long Island. Finally riding on Sound Ave and stopping at the restaurants, farms and vineyards.

Besides the ride on Ocean Pkwy, this sounds like a nice, north shore day trip. I've actually done most of that myself in one shot.
Take the Ocean for the south shore trip.
Walking the board walk to the lighthouse at Robert Moses
Working in a high rise in the city in the morning and sitting at a picnic table at Venetian Shores on a warm summer night having a beer, cool ocean breezes listening to some music in the same day.
Dinner at a Bistro table outside in Babylon Village
Numerous spring/summer/fall street festivals
Fishing the FI inlet for fluke early and stripers late in the season. Snapper fishing with the little ones
You have to count all that comes with being close to the city as a benefit as well. The Museums, restaurants, Broadway, sporting event, et al. Manhattan is not Long Island but the proximity to get in and get out is a HUGE mark in the plus column.
That despite our differences, many of us LIers do have a sense of pride in where they live and appreciate all that is good about our great big sandbar.
I like the farmstands to but you have to be carefull .A lot of the stuff they sell does not come from LI. Anything not specifically labled as home grown or our own or LOng island grown is usually from new jersey and can be gotten cheaper at a supermarket.
I do a CSA farm share out of Jamesport, so everything I get comes from that 1 farm. Had a delicious dinner last night of roast chicken with kale, sweet potatoes and roasted granny smith apples. I agree you have to be careful at farmstands. I do believe in supporting local farms- food that is local is fresher. Lasts longer, tastes better!
There are also some LI wines I like quite a bit.
I have lived in 3 countries and 2 other states, FYI. Just happen to like it here.

Sailing on the Great South Bay. Whale watching off Montauk Point. Shopping in Sayville, East Hampton, and Sag Harbor when I can afford it. Bar hopping in Bay Shore. Spicy's in Riverhead only. Enjoying a nice Summer day on any South Shore Beach. Hey LI Rules. No matter if it's on the North South or Center. I have found something special in every town on LI.
