Mi Tierrita in brentwood is great for spanish food, also the Portuguese restaurant outside the brentwood train station. another one of my local faves is Bubbas Burrito Bar in Islip. small spot mainly for burritos but also have other related items and even beers. VERY good, and the burritos are HUGE. pretty good selection too. blows Chipotle away
LaPlage Wading River...nice white table rest with many specials. Lunch in the summer. Good food made with fresh ingredients. Smokin Al's is the bomb. Bobique is good also. Good pizza in Jamesport. I can't recall the name of the place, but it is in a strip center on 25. Had a slice with wild mushrooms and blue cheese...over the top.
Now for the tomato throwing: Been to Maureen's kitchen and Colloseos(sp?). This was not a terrible experience, but they really need to start taking credit cards. I went to Maureen's about 5 years ago. When I had to walk across the street to CVS to get cash, I decided, I wasn't coming back. The food wasn't bad, but not worth the effort. I understand that it cost the business money to take cards but at some point, if your business is growing, you need to start accomodating your customers. That was a real turnoff. I still go to Colloseos when I have cash in my pocket, but I won't go out of the way to make a withdrawl. Nick and Toni's in East Hampton was fabulous, but I can only afford it at the blue moon. I am looking forward to trying Gracies in RP.
I love Bubba's in Islip. I never finish the burritos because they are so big. The naked burrito is my favorite. it's everything they put in the burrito but without the tortilla. I ususally get the grilled chicken.

i usually get the land and sea, which includes steak and shrimp, or the idaho with chicken, which of course has potatos
I just tried "Taste of Portugal" in East Meadow. It's hidden in a strip mall on Newbridge Road between North Jerusalem and Hempstead Turnpike, with a terrible parking lot. The grilled calamari and a pork belly special were delicious, the sides were good too. A lot of food reasonably priced - 5 beers, two appetizers, two entrees which come with two sides each - $60. I'll be going back, if for nothing else to get the grilled calamari and sit at the bar, maybe sample some other appetizers.
Luckily they are only open for breakfast & lunch so you don't need to worry about getting shanked by a crackhead, they are usually still sleeping at lunch time.
Now, there's an endorsement for Long Island! You should put that in the list of positives on another thread here.
