EDIT: I would be getting blown-in cellulose insulation.

Hello all, been a while since I posted, hope everyone is well.

It's getting cold again, and it's about that time to look at my house for air leakage.

We have forced-air heating (or hot air heating), and it really isn't working out to be the best.

When the heat kicks on, it's usually fine, (on first and basement), when it kicks off, it gets cold fast.

Now i know this is generally a problem with forced air heating, but I'm also sure it's due to the lack of almost ANY insulation in my walls.

Also the second floor is FREEZING, which is dissapointing since everyone talks about how heat rises etc.

So my question is:

* Would re-insulating my walls/attic REALLY help keep the warm air in, even if for only a bit longer?

I don't want to spend the money if it's not going to help. I've heard of others with forced air heating where insulation made a difference in keeping it warmer longer, and I'm assuming hte attic is why it's SO cold upstairs, all the heat is rising right out.

Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated!!

In 2000 I gutted our den/garage and made one den 24x26.I put in new insulation and new Simonton windows. The room holds heat and stays so warm. The downside is the rest of my house (built 1958) is cooler in winter.Cat and dog love as they sleep in den.In hindsight I should've pulled all sheetrock down and insulated the bedrooms but alas.....too late now as we are less than five years from moving.Let the next guy do it.

Do you have forced air? Was it holding heat before the insulation added?

No but cold walls will quickly neutralize hot air.

Hi,

I'm getting insulation in my walls this coming Tuesday. According to my neighbor, it made a big difference for them so I'm hopeful that it will be worth the expense. Considering my house has almost no insulation at all I think it will be a benefit. I'll post back after and let you know if the difference is immediately noticeable.

BTW, I have radiators, not forced air.

I'll second Delfino. I used them on several renovations I did for people.
They're real good and very reasonable.
