Also, just wanted to add that your area really does have a lot to offer and we'd feel much better looking in the higher price range to have more choice. The problem is that we can't sell our place here in Chicago and need to do this carrying 2 mortgages. So, it may not be realistic--difference between what we can do and want to do. Thanks to everyone for keeping it real for us

I don't know if you need to keep your residence in Chicago for an indefinite period of time, but maybe renting would be a good interim solution for you. It would afford you the opportunity to get to know the different areas/neighborhoods/hamlets/villages/school districts before tying yourselves down with a 30-yr mortgage only to possibly find you've made the wrong "neighborhood" choice...

Lots more flexibility, even though it would require another move down the road.

What do you think?

Happy Thanksgiving. Renting might be tough because we have a cat that must come with us, but it may be an option.

Not sure the cat would be a problem for most landlords. Expect to pay another 1/2 month rent in security though. (Just don't go through a rental agent - that's a waste of money)

Pragcap----I tried responding in a direct message, but it couldn't go through so I'm responding here. Nice to meet you as well here. We're in the South subs in Oak Forest. We also seek to be closer to family, and I'm a little home sick--miss the real pizza and real bagels. Worried about the increased crime there though. I just read that 5 houses in South Merrick were robbed, all in one night. Those are million $ homes, and coming from nearby Wantagh we never had that kind of crime there. I guess the recession is a factor, and it goes on now everywhere. Anyway, prices on LI are still on the high side, so don't know if we can make the move. Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving
