I'm just inches close to settling down in Darien, CT and commuting to midtown Manhattan.
But by some weird happenings, I ended up in the Great Neck village area of LI. Geez, I'm in love at the place's beauty.
Darien is gorgeous but I'm kinda bummed with the 55 minute commute, 270 bucks metro north pass, plus a 250 parking fee per year in the train station. I've been spoiled all these years by seating my buns on my car and starting from my home at 8:42 and still pulling into the lot before 9.
The equinox gym in midtown shut down for thanksgiving and I hit the road to the closest from Flushing where I'm temporarily holed up. There is this cool equinox club at long shore road and I just love its layout and had a savage workout, after a long time
And then I went on a sight seeing trip. I think the beach is close too. I am close to scrapping the Darien idea and I wanna stay in LI.
Any of you commute to midtown? How do you like the area and how is the commute? Thanks for reading. Would Long Island welcome an East Indian dude with open arms? I made 4 friends in the gym too. Nice people.
The geography of Great Neck can be very confusing because Great Neck is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address (6,022 acres) are not in the village (866 acres):
Places that have a "Great Neck, NY 11020 through 11024" mailing address that are not in the Village of Great Neck are in the Village of Great Neck Estates, the Hamlet of Great Neck Gardens, the Village of Great Neck Plaza, the Hamlet of Harbor Hills, the Village of Kensington, the Village of Kings Point, the Village of Lake Success, the Village of Russell Gardens, the Village of Saddle Rock, the Hamlet of Saddle Rock Estates, the Village of Thomaston and the Hamlet of University Gardens.
Walter, i think University Gardens is a village, and Russell Gardens is a hamlet
The Village of Russell Gardens was incorporated in 1931, while University Gardens is an unincorporated area, and, hence, a hamlet.
A map of the Village of Russell Gardens in the Town of North Hempstead, Nassau County:

All places in the Village of Russell Gardens have a "Great Neck, NY 11021" mailing address.

All places in the Hamlet of University Gardens have a "Great Neck, NY 11020" or "Great Neck, NY 11021" mailing address.

Yes, we would. Also, if you want to find East Indian movies, food, etc., you can find them nearby in Queens (Jackson Heights, Bellerose, etc.) or in Nassau County (Hicksville, etc.).
What we need to know is what kind of housing you are looking for and what your approximate budget is. Are you single, married, married with family? Do you want to buy a house, co-op or condo? Would you like to rent instead?
Great Neck is very pretty indeed and has very good shopping. I also think the commute is excellent for midtown Manhattan; current monthly ticket $204; rush hour express commute to Penn Station 24 minutes (7:47 am leave 8:11 am arrive). I don't know much about the parking situation (probably gets crowded early like most LIRR stations on LI), but there are buildings that are walkable to the LIRR where you could buy or rent an apartment and then you wouldn't have to worry about the parking lot.
AC, you and your celery would be most welcome here.
Holy sheeeeeet, do you live in LI?? Nice. What's the best grocery store chain out there to get my celery? When I lived in Connecticut, I lived in Stop and Shop, while Shoprite scared me LMAO.
I'm working out every day in the Great Neck Equinox gym. I just love the area, yesterday I went to Scarsdale and surroundings in Westchester and that was good too. Too many options, I dunno where to go

Thanks so much and to the rest of you who responded
The monthly ticket kind of depresses me in terms of charge. But I think I'll have to bite the bullet and take it coz the only way to avoid it would be to live in Queens and the like. I'm already scared of Queens. It reminds me of the dingy cityscape and ghettos in Bombay and Calcutta back in India. My best gauge of an area's affluence is the nature of grocery stores, schools and the closest Dunkin Donuts. I'm not kidding LOL.
I can tell a remarkable difference between the ones in Queens and those in areas like Greenwich or Darien in CT.
So I have three areas now to choose from. CT or westchester or a LI area close to LIRR. But call me crazy, I'm already in talks with a major company which puts a fatter ATM at my door in Texas. Can't resist it coz Mrs Chamataka is in Texas. Next 2 weeks will decide where I will end up for good.
