I remember about ten years ago (maybe more), a group of people banded together to try to change the name of West Hempstead to Mayfair Park. I don't recall who the group was - political organization or just disgruntled residents, but it never happened. I heard it was because many West Hempstead residents felt it would be overtly racist to do so.
Anyway, my parents and my fiance's brother both just sold their houses in record time at the prices for which they were asking, so the presence of "diversity" hasn't lowered property values. I loved West Hempstead and going to school with the Island Park kids was particularly rewarding since we made friends with kids from other towns. I suppose it is a "drive through" town, but it's not bad. Some of the homes are quite impressive.

I love the homes in West Hempstead. They are similar to homes in Malverne.

I have friends who just starting renting there and every time I visit I like the area more and more. Reminds me of a LI version of the original Bay Ridge or Marine Park in Brooklyn. Friendly, down to earth, non-pretentious, lots to do, close to NYC.

my brother in law is in W.Hempstead and loves it there.

the only problem my friends saw is when they were looking for a house and decided not to buy there was he woudl say "this street is nice, but not the next one, but over here is good, but not over there" mainly that there are nice clusters and not nice clusters (not that there isn't in any town) but basically you can have nice houses just down the street from more run down types.

Most of the "bargins" you see online aren't real bargins, they aren't in teh areas you want them to be.

Are you talking about Eagle Avenue? I always thought the further you got from Lakeview Station the better. And then better to be on the North side of Eagle Ave.

But that Eagle Ave area is pretty good, safe streets, walk to LIRR, CVS, Carvel, Halls Pond Park. Great access to Southern State, we could get to JFK in 10 mins flat.

But I do wonder what that area will be like in 10 years.
