I read that too, the consumer reports issue, however if you look at the details, for NYC (which is the closest city to Long Island where they actually had detailed information for) their service was better than Sprint.
I live in Nassau County and I have had At&t for at least 15 years now, I was with them before they were cingular, when the changed the cingular, and then when they changed back to At&t! Honestly, I never had a single problem with their service, however I can only speak for voice. Never a dropped call, even when I travel.
The only time I ever had problems, is up on the mountains in NY and Vermont, no service on the mountain (I snowboard) where my friends who have verizon have service on the mountain. I also get no service in my office building where I work, which kind of sucks but its not At&t's fault, the building won't let At&t put something on the building to improve service, so I just forward all my calls to my office phone when I am at work. Verizon/Sprint is the only 2 providers that have good service inside my building, so I don't knock At&t for this. (another reason I want to switch to sprint though)
The only reason I want to switch to sprint is because of the price. I pay about 170/month for 5 lines (this includes my 20% corporate discount). With sprint, I will be paying 155/month for 5 lines, except now we will all have unlimited internet, with At&t I just have voice and text messaging.
Of course this price is due to the fact that I know how to get in on their Sero plan, which is their employee referral plan...google it!
