I just finished my undergrad in NYC and will be moving to another state to receive my grad degree in the summer, leaving me with 6 months or so time home.

I'm looking to volunteer during the weekdays or weekends, something to keep me busy. I can't justify finding a job at the moment, after I buy a car, put it on the road, job hunt, buy work attire, etc, it might not be worth it. I might not be able to find a job within 6 months, and if I find a job, all of that won't be worth my 6 months earnings, especially low-wage part time jobs. I want to take it easy for 6 months, spend time with my family and give back to the community.

I will be living at my father's in Nesconset during this time, unfortunately myself nor my family has the means to buy me a car.

Does anyone know of where I can find a volunteering gig? Preferably, close by or accessible by bus.

There is a place on C-D to do just that ... compare areas. It is under the "General U.S." category and is called "City vs. City." Here is a moderator description of it with rules:

City vs. City or "place vs. place" discussions where the discussion is comparing one place to another, or comparing specific things/amenities/attractions cities have compared to others, etc.

I was a volunteer (docent) for the Fire Island Lighthouse & park after I retired. That was a great job because you got to park for free and be outside in that beautiful area.
