I think it's different when you have kids. If I'm out of milk, I can't just fill a bottle with ketchup and water.
I definitely see your point though, and I keep a very small pantry right now bcs we want to do work on the kitchen. We eat a lot of fruits/veggies, so that does send me to the store at least weekly.
Went to Meat Farms today in Commack. Picked up some things that were cheap. Some of the stuff was downright scary, but it's winter. The berries were disgusting but got a melon, apples, grapes and pears. Nice greens, green beans, but those are winter crops. Spent $38 for 3 tote bags of groceries. All produce except $8 from the deli... and $4.50 for Cannoli cream.
Got the circular for the new Shoprite in the mail today. Interested to see what that store is like.
We have ShopRite out here in Staten Island, and the prices tend to be the cheapest out of all of the supermarkets nearby (there's a King Kullen nearby that's more expensive. Western Beef is a little bit cheaper than ShopRite, but the overall quality isn't as good)
So it gives you the best value for your money.
As far as my bill, I'd say it's around $150 a week for 6 people. We stock up on things, so it's hard to say, but generally we buy things on sale and use coupons to cut costs.
About 110 a week with 2 adults and 1 cat and 1 dog.
One thing that makes me crazy is the price of cereal. If it is not on sale for $2.50 a box I do not buy it. I have noticed that Taget has great prices.
Amazon subscribe and save is great, same price as Costco, but it's delivered to your door. Never a shipping charge for the s&S stuff, all shipping is free. WalMart online has great prices for paper goods, free shipping on that stuff too. Waldbaums has online shopping, they do a nice job, charge $5 for the shopping and a sliding scale from $10.95 -$0 to deliver. The advantage of shopping online is that you stick to a budget, you only buy what you need. I figure out what I'm going to cook for the week and only buy what's on sale and what I need.
Pathmark and King Kullen also have online shopping, I feel like the Pathmarks are dirty?? and don't live near a King Kullen.
We don't have a car, so for two adults it's about $125 a week.
2 people and I spend about 80-100 a week, at least 25.00 of it is cleaning supplies or non food items. If I am having people over or a big BBQ then I spend $140.00 that week. Now that we are loosing weight we eat less.
2 young adults..i allow $100 a week..that includes some eating out...i've tried just bringing cash to the supermarket..it's hard because you're afriad to go over what's in your wallet but the handheld scanners have done away with that fear at stop n shop
I agree about the cereal part if it's not onn sale I do not buy it. I am the only one in the house who eats it so I buy the stuff my husband hates like grape nuts, special k, forsted mini wheats. I sometime buy the store brand of the same cereal and it tastes fine to me. When we used to shop at costco we would go every 6 months and spend like $500 that included toilet paper, some food, and any other non perishables. Now if we go we spend maybe $100 and that's just for toilet paper, garbage bags and maybe a few cleaning supplies.
