The cops I know are all lost souls who didnt really have a destination or interest in life.. they just became cops..Now thats not everyone though
Do you have any evidence of corruption? If so, let's see it.

Base pay should be around 40K starting to 65K senior.
OT limited to max xtra 12 hrs./wk. for safety.
Also, instead of all the high OT pay, they could probably hire a couple of more po per shift, and bring a po in early on shift to do paperwork when necessary, send the other out to finish tour. 25 years max career is fine.
What do you do for a living? How would you like it if people said that your pay should be capped?

The police compensation has go through the roof and needs to be brought back to reality. Over $200k in total compensation on average is unsustainable.

We aren't just "people." We are TAXPAYERS....Kinda like THEY work for US. See the difference?

While I agree making 150k is insane for a seven year cop, the salaries you posted are somewhat embarasing in how low they are for the position.

I'm retired NYFD and that's what the salaries were for us and the cops about 10-15 years ago, before things got insanely out of whack. We all new what we were getting into, and we loved the job. No additional $100K hazard pay necessary, it's always been part of the job. Drop the salaries, and they'll still be lining up for the test, especially in these tough times! ......and no I'm not jealous. Also, my cousin is a doctor in NY working early am to late pm barely making $150K; he told me this when l discussed the last time this posted.

They don't pay taxes also? They are you neighbor, friend, and most of all protector. Be grateful and don't chastise.

Most of you are overlooking the fact that fringe benefits make up a good amount of the "average" compensation number quoted. Their real gross salary is significantly less.

So, let's compare apples to apples and not oranges.

The median base salary is about $116,000, about $150,000 with OT added in. Another problem is the compensation. 18-26 sick days Annually? Thats insane, especially once you remove compensation caps as Mangano has done and wind up with some top chiefs walking off with $800,000 a year in addition to six figure yearly pensions.

So, let's compare apples to apples and not oranges.
Nassau County
Median household income $92,450 (3.05 people)
Median earnings for male full-time, year-round workers (dollars) $65,663
Median earnings for female full-time, year-round workers (dollars) $49,749

Per Capita Income $40,515

Nassau County (NCPD) Police & Fire
Median Pay (2010) $129,213.34 (1.00 people)
Avg of Top 1000 Pay (Top 40% Bracket) $157,089.77
Avg of Top 250 Pay (Top 10% Bracket) $179,782.06
Total Average Earnings (all inclusive) $202,400.00

Half the force makes over $150,000.
source: seethroughny.net

So $202,400 all inclusive average pay for NCPD is 3x the median income for a full time male worker living in Nassau County. And it is 4x the median income for full time female workers. I'm sure you don't consider everyone else in the county chopped liver right? We do help society too; Almost everyone here contributes something. I'm getting a vibe of classism here, almost like the only people that serve society in the county are NCPD -- and no one else matters.

For every $10,000 you bring down that $202,400 average pay, the county will save $25,000,000.00. Bring it down to what an entire family makes ($92,450), and the county will save $270,000,000.00. I know this job is brutally awful to go through, that's why overtime is excessive... ; but if you cut most of the overtime, these type of savings can be achieved and we can get back to normalcy here. You will increase each officer's Quality of life, they'd have more time to spend with their family if they have one, their friends, leisure and their taxes would never increase again. In fact, their taxes will be a lot lower and the county would flourish if these necessary cuts are made.

An absolutely bulletproof case for change- well reasoned and superbly researched. Thank you!
