Does anyone know if teachers employed by the Catholic high schools in diocese of rockville centre are required to have their masters degree? (as required of their counterparts in the public school system)

They must have a NYS teacher certification so yes, they must have a masters or enrolled in getting one within 3 years.

I do not think you need a masters for NYS certification. From the NYSED Office of Teaching Initiatives this is the most commoan pathway for obtaining a certificate:
  • Earning a bachelor's degree from an approved teacher preparation program at a NYS higher education institution or one in a state with a reciprocity agreement with NYS
  • Passing the New York State Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST), the Assessment of Teaching Skills- Written (ATS-W), and the appropriate Content Specialty Test(s) (CST)

You need to complete your masters within 3 years of obtaining your certificate.

I love that website you mention. You read the requirements the state comes up with and I can understand why the state wastes so much money.

It's five years to get the masters. The three years are the years of experience as a classroom teacher.

I don't understand. I posted an incrorrect page? or the state has the wrong information?

Go here: http://eservices.nysed.gov/teach/cer...Help.do#cfocus

I do not see where it states you MUST have an MA to get a NYS initial cert or professional cert.

Go here: Search New York's State Certification Requirements for Educators.

You don't need a masters for an initial cerificate, but you do need one for the professional. If you are looking at individual eval, you will see additional education - masters. This website is not always as clear as it pretends to be.

Got it. I stand corrected. Thanks a lot.

Private school teachers are not required to have a Masters degree or even a teaching certification. I have many "uncertified" friends and relatives working for the diocese of rvc.

Private schools can hire any instructor with any level of educational experience.

With exception to this rule are those required to do special education (as required by fed/state), and even then, it's the jurisdiction of the school district in which the private school falls in to cover those needs.
